When we are struggling with our mental health, talking to a trained therapist can be an important step towards feeling better. There are many different approached to therapy, and what works well for one person may not work in the same way for another.

Understanding the different types can help us feel more informed and confident when considering support.

CBT – focuses on the relationship between our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It can help recognise unhelpful patterns of thinking and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult situations.

Counselling – provides a safe and confidential space to talk about thoughts, feelings and experiences. A therapist can listen without judgement and help you explore your concerns and develop ways of coping.

Psychodynamic therapy – explores how past experiences, relationships and unconscious patterns may influence our thoughts and feelings today. Understanding these patterns can sometimes help us make some positive changes.

DBT – based on CBT and focuses on skills such as managing difficult emotions, coping with distress and improving relationships, particularly useful for people who experience intense or difficult to manage emotions.

Mindfulness – encourages us to pay attention to the present moment without judging our thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness-based approached can help people develop a greater awareness and learn ways to manage stress.

There is no single type of therapy that is right for everyone. A person’s needs, circumstances and preferences can all influence which approach may be most suitable.
