Letting go of Perfectionism: Why “Good Enough” Really Is Enough
Have you ever spent hours trying to make something perfect, only to feel it still wasn’t good enough? Or perhaps you’ve avoided starting something altogether because you were afraid of getting it wrong. If so, you’re not alone.
Many of us live with perfectionism without even realising it. We tell ourselves if we just work a little harder, achieve a little more, or avoiding making mistakes, we’ll finally feel confident and successful. But perfectionism often keeps us trapped in a cycle of self-doubt, anxiety and exhaustion.
The truth is that perfection isn’t possible. We’re human, and being human means learning, growing, and sometimes getting things wrong.
So where does perfectionism come from?
It can develop for many reasons. It may stem from childhood experiences, high expectations, fear of criticism, or belief that our worth depends on what we achieve. Overtime these beliefs can become deeply rooted, making us feel as though anything less than perfect is a failure.
The cost of always striving for perfect, can affect many areas of our lives. It may stop us from trying new things, make us fear failure, or leave us constantly comparing ourselves to others. Even when we succeed, we may dismiss our achievements and focus only on what could have been better.
A gentle reminder – You are not defined by your mistakes, your achievements, or how productive you’ve been today, your worth isn’t something you have to earn.
How therapy can help
