Recognising the signs of Stress, Anxiety and Depression.
Mental health is just as important as your physical health, yet the signs of emotional distress are often overlooked or misunderstood. Stress, anxiety and depression can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or circumstances.
Recognising early signs is an important first step towards getting help and improving wellbeing.
Stress is the body’s natural response to challenges or demands, short term stress can help you stay focused and motivated, but ongoing stress can affect both your physical and mental health.
Common signs of stress include:
Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried
Irritability or mood swings
Difficulty concentrating
Trouble sleeping, feeling tired all the time
Headaches, muscle tension or digestive problems
Changes in appetite
Feeling unable to relax
Anxiety is more than occasional worry, common signs:
Excessive worrying that is difficult to control
Feeling restless, tense of on edge
Racing thoughts
Rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath
Sweating or trembling
Difficulty sleeping
Avoiding situations that trigger fear or worry
Depression is a common mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels and functions. It is more than simply feeling sad for a few days.
Common signs include:
Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
Loss of interest in activities you one enjoyed
Low energy, constant fatigue
Feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt
Withdrawing from family and friends
