The power of self-care
When people hear the term self-care, they often picture luxurious spa days, scented candles, bubble baths, or weekend getaways. While these activities can certainly be relaxing true self-care can go much deeper.
It’s about making intentional choices that support your physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being every day. Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s an essential part of maintaining good mental health and building resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
What is self-care?
It is the practice of looking after your overall wellbeing through healthy habits and mindful choices. Recognising your needs and taking steps to meet them before stress becomes overwhelming.
Self-care is not selfish, it enables you to care for your family, friends and a whole host or responsibilities by ensuring your own wellbeing is supported.
Prioritising sleep, nourishing your body eating balanced meals, staying hydrated provides your brain and body with the nutrients they need to function well.
Setting healthy boundaries-learning to say “no” when necessary is an important part of self-care. Protecting your time and energy helps prevent burnout and allows you to focus on what truly matters.
Being kind to yourself, many people are far more compassionate towards others than they are towards themselves.
Treating yourself with patience, recognising your achievements and accepting that it’s ok to make mistakes and ask for help.
One of the biggest misconceptions about self-care is that its indulgent or self-centred, in reality caring for yourself allows you to show up for the responsibilities in your life.
Self-care looks different for everyone, the most effective self-care routine is one that meets your individual needs and helps you thrive one small step at a time.
